Without the information
offered by the Journal and the ISSCC, I could never have written any
papers or published books. Even my patents have been based on information
I learned at the ISSCC.

When I participated
in a Panel Discussion "Best and Worst in Digital Circuits" for ISSCC
1999, I reviewed almost all the important papers in the field. Studying
the past is useful to see the fundamental ideas and thoughts on the
field which are hidden behind the present-day new ideas. Even in the
CMOS age, the bipolar device is important and interesting. Differential
circuits such as ECL are useful and beautiful because of the symmetry
and low voltage swing. These provide ideas for future low voltage CMOS.

My transition from
Bell Labs, with it's superb technical library, to a start-up, with none,
was smoothed by having the JSSC archive. It is very valuable to be able
to search for an old journal or conference paper. I can track down when
a certain circuit technique was first mentioned, then follow its improvements.
I have been able
to learn the fundamentals as well as the latest tweaks for various applications.
It is a good "jump start" for someone like myself, who began
my career in a the device research area, and moved into circuits later.
It helps me not only learn from others, but also contribute to this
field.
In many cases, I find that the older papers are better written; they
are concise yet clearer, with fewer acronyms!
